Remembering Marge and Dr. Phil Andrews - by William M. Andrews, Son

Dr. Philip William Andrews (IV) 1933-1987
Birth: 17 Jan 1933 in Decatur, Macon Co, IL - Death: 10 Nov 1987 in St Luke' s Hospital, Houston, Harris Co, TX (age 54):
Marriage: Marjorie Scott JOHNSTONE, 24 Jun 1955 in Decatur, IL (age 22)
Philip was always interested in railroads, particularly the Wabash line. As a boy, he had an 0-27 Lionel train layout built with two 4x8 foot sheets of plywood in the basement of the family home at 820 West Grand Avenue in Decatur, Illinois. He was an artist of significant merit, completing numerous water color paintings, particularly of the Wabash steam locomotives. These paintings were exquisite in every detail. Building many models and other items of note, Phil was an excellent craftsman.
He was "hooked" on science from a young age, creating a science lab in a small room next to his bedroom.   It was filled with test tubes, a Bunsen burner, and microscope, and was definitely off limits to his younger brother and sister. He built from scratch, a Geiger Counter for a high school project and an artificial heart machine for dogs while a pre med. student.

Philip married Marjorie Ann Johnstone, in Decatur, IL on June 24, 1955. While attending Millikin, he took summer courses and extra classes to complete his degree in three years. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity at Millikin. During this time he also worked in a local chemical laboratory, Woodson-Tennett. He then entered University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago, and graduated there four years later.  While going to med. school, Phil worked part time at Cook County Hospital. He and Marjorie lived at 615 S Marshfield, in Chicago, which was an outstanding prototypical example of a then-contemporary American slum dwelling. Phil's parents provided many hours of effort and materials to make improvements towards their living comfort. Their son, Bill, was born while they were in Chicago. Phil took his internship and residency at the Southern Pacific Railroad Hospital in San Francisco, CA. Children: William Meredith (4 Jul 1956-); Susan Marie (29 Dec 1958-); Philip Ross (19 Jan 1960-); Marjorie Elizabeth (17 May 1962-); Diane Lynn (1 Sep 1966-)

Upon completion of this training, he entered active duty with the Air Force. He received a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley in 1961. In 1964, he was board certified in aerospace and preventive medicine. While in the Air Force, Philip served variously as a flight surgeon, a hospital commander, a staff officer of the inspector general's office, and the head of NATO pilot training. He achieved the rank of Colonel prior to his medical retirement in 1980.
His duty stations required the family to move frequently. They were in Salina, Kansas when Susan and Philip Ross were born, San Antonio, Texas when Marjorie Elizabeth was born and at Hickham Field, Hawaii when Diane Lynn arrived. While in Hawaii, Philip became interested in orchids. He became an accredited judge in the American Orchid Society, as well as a trustee of the AOS. He helped to start the Red River Orchid Society, and served as president of the Southwest Regional Orchid Growers Association. His orchids received many awards over the years.
He was commissioned a Captain (0 -3). One of his first assignments was as Chief of Aerospace Research.  Other duty stations included Universal City TX, Enid OK, Alabama, and later for a year as the Commanding Officer of the hospital in Udorn AFB, Thailand. He took an early medical retirement from the Air Force while at Randolph Field, San Antonio TX.
He devoted his later years to model railroading, to stock investments, and developing and maintaining his orchids. Philip died following heart transplant surgery Nov 10, 1987. He was buried in Chapel Hill Cemetery near San Antonio.
Marjorie Scott Johnstone (IV) 1932-1983
Marjorie, or Marge as we knew her, was born 14 February, 1932 in Hinsdale IL. She was the daughter of Marjorie Howie Scott and Paul Meredith Johnstone. Marjorie and her husband, Philip, met while both were attending Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Marjorie was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity while at Millikin. She got her teaching degree in Home Economics and taught briefly in Bement IL.
Marge shared an interest in flowers and plants, especially orchids, with Phil. In 1973, she began working at Arbor Florist in Universal City, TX and in 1982 she became co owner of the shop. She expressed her creative talents in needlepoint. Marge made numerous canvases featuring orchids, selling many of them at regional orchid shows, while Phil was busy judging orchid plants and flowers. Much of her work, however, was special commissions by people who wanted a lasting remembrance of their awarded orchids.
Marjorie also died prematurely, due to a degenerative nerve disease. She was 51 at the time of her death, and is buried in San Antonio TX. - Bill Andrews
