The Neely Family

Matt
Sally was second
of the three Andrews children ... between Phil and Jim. Sarah (Sally)
Caroline Andrews born 16 July 1937 in Decatur, Illinois. Her husband to be,
Robert Neely ("Phil Neely")
born 13 Sept 1934 Freeport, Illinois, and married Sally 10 March 1957 in
Decatur. Phil died 2 Mar 1991 in Rockford, Illinois. Sally had, in abundance,
most all of Mom's talents plus a superb talent on the piano. She was
exceptionally popular among her friends and holds many of these friendships
nearly 80 years. She was a superb seamstress who made her own wedding dress, cut
down a Navy uniform for Matt and created many other sensations of her time. And
she did all the wife, mother and friend roles for her wonderful Family. Sally
dropped out of Millikin University as a junior to marry Phil Neely and, much
later in life, returned to complete her college work at Western Oregon
University with a superb academic record, just missing the Dean's List. She
earned a BS in Business. As a young married lady, she had serious
medical surgery that would have 'downed' an average person ... for Sally, it was
a speed bump. She does not slow down from what she is doing. Sally is an avid church member including an active role as a bell
ringer. What
started as a hobby with genealogy soon developed into an expert level: Sally
became the Family Historian and tracked lineage for several Family members back
many generations.
Sally and Phil became involved in the American Field Service program in
1970 and for the next ten years. In 1971 the family opened their home
and hearts to Ulrike Hager, an AFS student from Graz Austria for 10
months. Since then Uli has returned to visit and Sally has been to see
Uli in Austria on three occasions. In 1975 Jill, age 15, was selected to
be an AFS student to Cordoba Argentina for 11 months.
In 1981 the Jefferson School Board threatened to bulldoze in the public
swimming pool and plant flowers. Sally came to action, gathering support
and created the Jefferson Park District to keep the pool open, a place
to safely learn to swim and keep youth from the dangerous river running
through town. Today the pool and the Park District both are thriving as
a place providing recreation for the town.
