Anne was born in Shanghai China, the second child of missionary parents. Her father, Hugh A. Keays, had been a mechanic on the Roy Chapman Andrews expedition in the Gobi Desert after a stent in the US Navy. Asia at that time was embroiled in wars and the Keays escaped to Manila, Philippine Islands. They caught the last ship out of Manila before the Japanese took control. Her father was captured at Corridor and held in a Japanese POW camp for the duration of the war. Anne married and had four children by the earlier marriage: Dawn, Tim, Matt and Susie (deceased). Left without spousal support with four young children, Anne entered a career in the federal civil service as a supply clerk at NAS Norfolk, Va. She worked her way up to handling the supply functions at the Staff, Commander Naval Air Forces, US Atlantic Fleet (CNAL) at Norfolk. That's where she met Jim who had the Aircraft Engineering Desk at the Staff. She later joined Jim in Los Angeles and took the position as Admin Officer for the FAA Office in Los Angeles. The timeframe was the early 1990s - in 1992, the Rodney King riots took place and we had abundant motive to leave the area. We had an agreement that whoever could get us out of LA, we'd take it ... anywhere. The US Department of Agriculture was expanding and created 9 Rural Development Admin (RDA) offices across the Country. Anne applied for the Admin Officer position of any of these. There were 1200+ candidates ... and Anne finished #1! She was offered her choice and selected Sayre, Pa, not far from Jim's Aunt Lucille. We left LA in Sept 92, heading east. So long LA. Jim's Navy career has been covered ad nausea by photos here, by sea story narratives here, by more anecdotes here and the Legion of Merit Medal saga here. If you want more, you may check Dad's Slides here or the additional pages here. After retirement, Jim and Anne built and operated the Stonefield Valley Railroad here. Jim developed and maintains the Decatur Class of 1958 web site here. You should NOT undertake these sites on a full stomach or completely sober. AJ1: - 8 The Pilgrim Retires - permanently!
